REAL MADRID VS BAYERN

The Champions League quarter-finals begin with a clash worthy of the final itself as Real Madrid take on Bayern Munich—a fixture that has become the most iconic and frequently played in the competition’s history. Both sides come into this game with mixed emotions after their weekend outings. Real Madrid were surprisingly beaten by Mallorca, despite Álvaro Arbeloa selecting a strong lineup. It was a result that raised questions, especially given their recent consistency.

Bayern, meanwhile, showed their resilience in dramatic fashion. Trailing 2-0, they staged a late comeback to win 3-2, scoring twice deep into stoppage time. Manager Vincent Kompany rotated his squad wisely, introducing key players in the second half to turn the game around.

There’s a sense that Bayern may have one eye more firmly on Europe, given their stronger position domestically compared to Madrid. In terms of form, the German side has been more consistent over a longer stretch. While Madrid had a solid run before their recent defeat, they’ve now suffered three losses in their last ten matches.

By contrast, Bayern are unbeaten in their last 13 games, with 11 wins and two draws. Their attacking output has also been impressive, often outscoring even the most elite opponents.

Interestingly, bookmakers are leaning towards Bayern in this one, which is rare when Madrid are playing at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The Spanish giants are considered slight underdogs, while Bayern are marginal favourites. Given the history between these two, a draw is also a realistic outcome.

Speaking of history, this will be the 29th meeting between the two clubs in European competition. While draws have been common, Real Madrid have remained tough to beat, losing just once in their last eight encounters in normal time. The last time they met was in the 2024 semi-finals, where Madrid progressed after a win at home and a draw in Germany.

When it comes to key players, Kylian Mbappé stands out immediately. His Champions League numbers this season are outstanding, averaging a goal almost every hour of play. He remains Madrid’s biggest attacking threat.

For Bayern, much could depend on the availability of Harry Kane. If he misses out, players like Michael Olise will be expected to step up, given his consistent goal contributions. Another name to watch is Lennart Karl, who recently made a decisive impact and could feature again.
